Falsetto Practice

March 14, 2025

If you're looking to improve your falsetto, there are a few key exercises that can really help strengthen your voice. A great place to start is with exercises that focus on chord compression, which is essential for controlling and enhancing your falsetto range.

One simple exercise is to practice making the “G” sound, which encourages your vocal folds to come together firmly. Try saying “gg-g-g” while placing your hand on your throat to feel the vibrations in your larynx. You should notice a bit of pulsing as your vocal folds engage. To make this exercise even more effective, incorporate more narrow vowels like “e” or “u,” as these help with both chord compression and resonance. Repeat the “goo-goo-goo” sound, making sure to vary the pitch as you go higher and lower. This will help you build more control over your falsetto.

If you find that challenging, try another method for reinforcing cord compression. Take a breath, hold it for a moment, then take in more air and feel your vocal folds come together. Once you get the hang of this, sing through the previous “goo” exercise again. This will help create more compression and allow for better tone control.

Another excellent exercise is to sing open vowels, such as "sing free," using the “NG” sound. This helps find the right compression while maintaining a tall, back-placed vowel. Singing through this exercise while keeping your voice relaxed and not transitioning to chest voice will help build strength and consistency in your falsetto range. As you continue to practice, experiment with songs that require head voice phonation to see how your falsetto has improved.

By regularly practicing these exercises, you'll find that your falsetto becomes stronger, more controlled, and easier to access.
