Unlock Your Voice

October 4, 2024

I’m Camille with 30 day singer, and these are 3 powerful exercises you probably haven’t tried yet.

1. Staccato to legato exercise for clarity & agility

The pattern is simple, and you can actually use any melodic pattern you like. The important thing is you start staccato, short and detached, and then do the same pattern legato, smooth and connected. This is really effective for improving your clarity and agility for riffs, runs and any fast sections. Singing each pitch short and detached forces you to be accurate and gives your voice the chance to find each pitch individually. Speed doesn’t matter at first, so go as slow as you need to be accurate, and increase speed as you’re able.

2. Slow roll exercise for low range extension

I learned this exercise from a bass, and they know low notes. The exercise moves one half-step or semitone at a time, and you can sing on any vowel or configuration you like. You slowly roll from one pitch to the next, then restart and do the same thing. Rather than demanding your voice to sing lower and lower, think of this as gently releasing tension and allowing your voice to explore these low notes. Speed doesn’t help here, so take your time and change up the vowel as needed for your comfort.

3. Puffer fish exercise for tension release

This counts as a semi-occluded or semi-closed exercise, which is the gold standard for gentle but effective vocal warmups. The puffer fish is my favorite for cooling down and for resetting when I’m in the middle of a session and feeling a little off. Try it with me by putting your lips almost together and exhaling, letting your cheeks puff out. Now do the same thing while making sound. You can use any warmup pattern here, but I’ll demonstrate on a 51 slide. Give it a try, and I trust you’ll feel how relaxing and easy this feels on your voice!
