Description:
Today we are going to begin working on vocal runs! If you can master a 3-note riff, you’re well on your way to longer, more complex riffs & runs! Later on next week we are going to trick our skills and try to make some longer runs, but it’s best to start with these smaller riffs first.
Most runs that we hear in contemporary music are based off the pentatonic scale. We make this scale by taking out 2 of the tones in our regular scale 4 and 7. This creates some gaps in our scale where we have to jump a larger interval than we might be used to when singing a scale, so watch out!

Exercises for day 12:
- Descending pentatonic 3-note riffs
- Ascending pentatonic 3-note riffs
For homework, keep reviewing the pentatonic scale, and work on these exercises above. Then see if you can add some short 3 note riffs to a song you are singing, or just try this out while singing along to songs on the radio. It’s best that they feel spontaneous and natural so have fun with this!
