Description:

Time to combine steps and skips in the major scale!

Exercise: 58–54321

This first pattern begins on step 5. So it’s a skip, then steps coming down. Feel free to sing on any other syllable or vowel.

Exercise: Major arpeggio into 9-tone: 1358-78987654321

Our second pattern begins with a major arpeggio, and ends with a stepwise scale. Listen to the beginning; then the turnaround, and the descent. Notice we’re stepping past number 8 - we haven’t done that before! 8 to 9 is the same thing as 1 to 2: it’s a whole step, or the happy birthday interval.

Exercise: Thirds (5-tone): 132435421

Let’s finish with an exercise in thirds. Singing 1,3 is a third; so is 2,4 and 3,5. Any time you sing one pitch in the scale, skip over one pitch, and sing the very next pitch in the scale, that’s a third! Notice the very last interval is not a third; it’s a second, when we sing 2-1 (or “birthday”).
