Description:
The next aspect we’ll work on is speed. Let's use a riff from Beyoncé’s rendition of The Star Spangled Banner as an example, focusing on the word "proof." Here's how we can improve speed:
- Start Slow: Begin at a pace where you can be precise. It's better to go slow and clean than to rush and be sloppy. Let’s try Beyoncé's riff slowly on the syllable DOO.
[Practice LSMRDL slowly] - Break it into sections: If you’re struggling with a riff, practice smaller sections first. For example, break the riff into LS, MRD, and L sections.
[Practice LS MRD L] - Work backwards: If you're having trouble with the end of a riff, try working on the last section first. Let’s practice this with the riff backwards:
[Work backwards: first MRDL, then add LS] - Isolate your “sticking point”: If you’re struggling with a specific transition, isolate that section. For example, isolate SM and add one note before or after to make it smoother.
[Isolate SM, add L or R] - Vowel choice: Narrow vowels like OO or EE make it easier to move fast. Try using these vowels for quick riffs.
- Practice quietly to build speed: For louder riffs, start practicing quietly to build the speed. Let’s practice this riff lightly on WEE, then medium on WEH, and loud on WAY.
[Practice WEE, WEH, WAY]
Now that we’ve improved speed, in the next lesson, we’ll work on adding style to our riffs.
