Description:

Part 3, speed and style.

Let’s begin with a Sustained Zee-Oh. For that sustained note on top, we’re holding for 3 full beats. Now, our goal is to maintain a consistent tone throughout the whole exercise. That could mean many things to you. Perhaps it’s breath support. Or supplying energy to the end of the phrase. Thinking down as we rise in pitch. Vowel modification so our EE and OH vowel are similar in tone quality. Pick one thing to focus on at first. Here we go!

[Exercise #7: Sustained zee-oh 1-3-5-888-5-3-1]

Now we’ll work on agility with a pentatonic scale run. Remember that the pentatonic scale has five pitches. We’ve learned in our riffs and runs tutorial that many runs are built around the pentatonic scale. So our exercise will include that scale, ascending and descending. Sing on any syllable you find easy today, and focus on accurate intonation. I’ll use “doo”.

[Exercise #8: Pentatonic run 1-2-3-5-6-5-3-2-1]

Feeling good? We’re almost done! We’ll end on another favorite of mine. It hits agility, range, and lining up the vowels. Our vowel progression will be EE-EH-AH-OH-OO. Focus on transitioning smoothly from one vowel to the next. And let’s sing!

[Exercise #9: 9-tone vowels EE-EH-AH-OH-OO]

Excellent work! You’re ready to rock your performance.
