Description:
Just like a major 7th chord is a major triad plus a major 7th, a minor 7th chord is a minor triad plus a minor 7th. Pretty easy to remember!
Let’s isolate that minor 7th to get comfortable with it. I learned the minor 7th interval using the song “Somewhere” from West Side story. It’s also in “Santa Fe” from Newsies.
Exercises:
Listen & repeat 1 b7
Minor 7th triad, ascending
Minor 7th triad, ascending & descending
Dominant 7th chord, ascending
Dominant 7th chord, ascending & descending
Play m7 or Dom7 chord, student guess quality & sing, then check pitches with piano
It’s totally normal if you had a hard time identifying the chord quality. It’s more important at this stage that you can sing at least a few of those pitches you hear!
In this next lesson, we’ll learn half-diminished chords and review all of the 7th chords you’ve learned so far.
