    Hi Camille,

I've worked on the Daily Warm-ups for Altos a few times. My question is, how do I know whether I'm an Alto 1 or 2?

    Thanks!

Hi, Robin! Alto 2s occasionally need to sing as low as Db3, whereas Alto 1s may sing as high as F5. If you're generally comfortable with your voice sitting lower: Alto 2. If you're generally more comfortable with those higher pitches: Alto 1.

Sometimes a conductor/choir director will also place you in one section or another based on vocal timbre. They may want a darker, richer tone for the Alto 2s and a brighter tone for the Alto 1s, for example.

But if you're self-selecting, consider which part of your range (low vs. medium-high) will sound the best and cause you the least vocal fatigue. Also worth noting: most of the time, altos will be singing together (unless it's an SSAA choir)!
