Hi, Sunaina! Those numbers are scale degrees. If you're familiar with music theory or play an instrument: all warmups within the beginner course use the major scale. If you're not familiar with music theory, here's an hour-long lesson on music theory for beginning singers. You don't need to understand music theory to improve your voice - but it does help most singers to understand the pattern of the warmup, which is why we include it. 1-2-3-2-1 is a pattern with pitches right next to one another, walking up (higher) and back down (lower). 1-5-1 is leap from your starting pitch (1) to a pitch several steps higher (5). 1-8-1 is an even larger distance.
Hope that helps!
