Good Morning, I’m a beginner that’s never sung before. How long should I practice each session a day?

    Hi Alex,

This is a great question. I think the practice length is all up to you. I would say that it's probably great to start with about 20 - 30 minutes of practice a day.

Here's a pretty great post about practicing and self-study written by one of our instructors, Camille. Check it out here: https://www.30daysinger.com/blog/how-to-improve-your-singing-voice-steps-to-follow-for-self-study

    Hi,

This is maybe a stupid question, but it is a serious one :)

When you say practice 20 minutes a day: Let's say I watch a video lecture of yours that is 15 minutes long. Does that count to the 20 minutes of practice-time? That is, should I study 5 minutes more the same day, or 20 minutes more?

I just want to make sure that I am not doing this wrong. I'm new to this so I don't know. I was just thinking that if you are new to singing and if you practice 15+20=35 minutes a day then you have practiced for too long and you can damage your voice.

    Best wishes,
    Joel

    Hi, Joel!

As long as you feel good and you're not becoming fatigued or sore, you can sing up to an hour or more daily! I recommend starting with a shorter time for beginners, just so they don't oversing and wear themselves out. But you'll feel it if your voice is becoming sore or tired.

That said, there's no "one size fits all" approach. I'd recommend a 10 minute warmup, watching a new lesson (or reviewing an old one), and then doing ear training or song work if you feel good and have more time.

Daily average practice between 10-15 minutes or as your voice allows. If you feel good keep going. Just be aware of how you feel. As you continue to practice like anything we work on daily. We get better and our capacity to do more grows. Whatever your doing, Make sure your having fun while your doing it.
