How can I tell if I am Alto or Soprano?

    Hi,

I see that you have warmup recordings for Alto and Soprano. Should we practice with these rather than the general one with Camille on the screen?

If so, how does one tell if they are Alto or Soprano.

For Alto, I find the low notes quite uncomfortable. However, in the middle and upper range it gets better.

For Soprano, I find the start and middle ranges okay, but the top notes I crack.

Note, I've always been told I am an Alto. But, that's because no-one thought I could sing, so I was put in Alto for choirs. However, since doing 30 day singer, I have been surprised that I can sing higher than I thought. So, now I am unsure. Your advice is welcome.

    Kathryn :)

Great question, Kathryn! It sounds like soprano would be a better fit for you. It's generally more difficult to extend your range lower (since we already speak in our low range), and it's more common to extend your range higher (since those high notes are simply not used in daily life).

Here are a few resources to find your range step by step:

Please keep in mind that your range is bound to change a bit over time, and you may fall between the two ("mezzo soprano" range).

    Thank you!
