Hey there,
I've recently joined 30 day singer, but was also practicing with free lessons for a few weeks before. I have a musical background, but have never really sung before. Some times Camille says to stop if your voice feels pain. But, I am not quite sure if it does or not. I would say that most of the time, there is a bit of - not pain - but a sensation like a very low key rough feeling in the back of my throat when I sing. However, I am almost 58, so I figure that maybe that is my throat getting used to singing? Please advise of how I can tell if this is just my throat getting used to singing, or something more to be concerned about?
Thanks,
Kathryn

Hi Kathryn,
Sensation is not a bad thing, and even a moment of discomfort is not inherently bad. This is a new physical activity, with muscles working in ways that they're not used to! And discomfort or even a little pain is a good signal to pay attention to, as you learn your current comforts and limitations.
I'd pay attention to how your voice feels after singing. If there is pain or discomfort that persists, that's a sign to back off, take a break, and/or evaluate what caused that discomfort. If the quality of your voice is also changed (rough/hoarse) after singing, that's a sign that perhaps the nature and/or amount of singing isn't currently sustainable.
I hope that helps!
