Practicing pitch

    Hey!

First off, I really enjoy your content and am very grateful for what you do! After having finished the wonderful 30 Day beginner course with Jonathan, I feel I have a good basis for my daily vocal exercises and understanding the related concepts. I've now graduated to Camille's lessons on singing in tune, which are great!!

I am at the part where we're identifying range (using the method laid out in this post: https://www.30daysinger.com/blog/finding-your-vocal-range). I find that I feel comfortable between G#2-D5, except for C4-D4. From D#4 it becomes more comfortable again.

With the above in mind, what would your suggestion be on how to proceed? I will of course keep on practicing pitch in general, but would it be beneficial to give C4-D4 extra attention so as to bridge the gap in the overall range, or should I hold off on that until I'm more experienced?

    Thank you so much!

Great question, Dexter! I've worked with several students who have trouble around middle C. My advice is to experiment with different sounds (as in, different vowel shapes, different syllables, different tone quality, different volume) to see what feels most comfortable on C4 and D4. You can work up to those pitches by first getting really comfy on the Bb3 and B3. You can also slide very slowly from, say, A3 to E4. There may be a "jump" at first, but try different semi-closed sounds (like an NG, straw singing, or lip trill) to see which helps you start to bridge the gap.

    Hope that helps!
