Throat getting dry quickly while singing

    Hey Camille,

hope you are doing good. When I sing my throat gets dry very quickly and there are forms to this as given below,

If I sing on my own I can sing for more time whilst my throat gets dry.
If I sing and play guitar at the same time, then my throat gets dry a bit quickly.
If I sing to a background track/song playing on Youtube (sing along) with/without guitar my throat gets dry just in a minute.

what is going on here, is it the difficulty/speed of song that is causing it ? i.e. lack of skill or undeveloped muscles. because I sound/perform better when I only sing (no-multi tasking), and I could go on like 30 ish minutes.

but why other times I am getting tired so easily, how can I improve.

one more help please, how can I stop singing from my throat. (sometimes it happens naturally, it is also tiring)

    Thanks,
    Mateen :)

Hi, Mateen! You might consider hydrating more while singing (and in general, since it takes time for water to hydrate your vocal folds). As for the difference in vocal fatigue in those different settings, it's possible that you're over-singing when singing with guitar or a track. Can you hear yourself well? Can you play softly and/or reduce the volume of the track so you can hear yourself better (and not sing with more volume or force than is necessary)?

As for singing from your throat: keeping your jaw relaxed and using your low body for support are the two best ways (in my opinion) to avoid your throat getting too involved. You can also train on a lip trill or NG (then open up to a vowel) to first take the pressure off of your throat, and maintain that relaxation when you sing on vowels or lyrics.

    Thanks for your response.

Yeah actually I got habituated to sign along songs while playing them on TV or PC, so volume would be medium, I will try unlearning this habit. but :) as soon I put a song I get enthusiastic & start signing along in the volume of the TV.

Okay I will try to keep my jaw relaxed by practicing lip drill or NG sounds.

I guess speed is also effecting here, because I find it hard to keep up with the karaoke and my throat hurts.

Many years ago I used to put Linkin Park songs and scream along with Chester's voice. maybe thats why my vocals got a bit hurt or strained, I hope I didn't damage my vocal chords completely.

I will take your points into consideration and implement them thanks Camille.

Camille, any self check or inspection generally one can do to check if their vocal chords are hurt/strained.

Like in shawn mendes documentary on Netflix, he does some vocal check, to see if he is fine, his vocal coach asks him to cancel the show because the vocal chords might get permanently damaged.

I spend most of my time on desk working. Could you give some points to take care of my throat, vocal chords.
