What does it mean when Camille says ''modify the vowel''

    And what's ''Melisma''?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi, Chana!

Vowel modification is when you modify the shape of the vowel to make it easier to sing, or to protect your voice in a tricky range. An example we use often is modifying the EE vowel by dropping your jaw: almost fitting EE into more of an AH shape. You end up with something closer to IH, but you have more resonant space (which you usually need to maintain your best tone in your upper register).

A melisma is another word for a run or riff: where there are multiple pitches sung on one syllable, usually in quick succession. Some singers use the words interchangeably, but you typically see "melisma" referring to "runs" in classical songs or operas and riffs or runs referring to contemporary music.
