singing question

I have noticed that the muscles under my jaw (swallowing muscles?) move down more when I sing the "goo goos" but not really when I do the "mum" exercise. Is it normal to have them move down during the goo exercise?

Is there a way to reduce this if this causes tension? Thank you :)

Kerrie, Awesome question! Yes, You do not want to engage the swallowing muscles. They will inhibit the sound or cut off that great sound. When you sing try keep a thumb under that area as you do the exercises. This is what I have been doing for years. It is not uncommon to engage the swallowing muscles. Another tip to help,  your overexaggerate the raising check bone area. Think of Pushing them up as you sing this will disengage the swallowing muscles.

Thanks for chiming in, Jim! Good tips.

Kerrie, you could also be feeling movement there as the result of your tongue moving the make the "G" sound. The base of your tongue (the "tongue root") can be felt underneath your jaw, behind your chin, and you'll feel movement when your tongue is active (as it has to be for certain articulations). In my opinion, that doesn't equate with tension!

Thank you Jim and Camille for sharing your clarifications !! Also I just tried exagerating a smile to raise those areas or use a Nya seems to work too, great tip Jim! :)

I would also like to ask whether there are any suretell signs that anyone may have found to diffentiate between tongue movement and swallowing muscle engagement while singing?

    Thank you

I personally don't worry about that distinction, since your tongue is one of the muscles involved in swallowing. Do you see neck muscles "popping out" or other types of visible muscle tension? That's what I'd look out for!

Hi Camille, I dont seem to have any front neck muscle tension that I notice at the moment, mostly just back of neck that gets a bit tired.

    Thank you :)

Hi Nelly, you can find a lot of tips in my beginner course:

    Confidence and Nerves: https://www.30daysinger.com/tutorial/30-day-beginner-course-with-camille/27

    Performance: https://www.30daysinger.com/tutorial/30-day-beginner-course-with-camille/28

For me, the most impactful factors in reducing nerves are (1) experience, (2) practice + preparation, and (3) focusing as much as possible on the story and lyrics. Best of luck to you!
