Prepare with enough space on inhale

I´m just studying your chapter "removing vocal strain" and Camille says that we have to prepare with enough space for high notes on inhale. But what do I do, if the phrase starts with lower notes that belong to the chest or the mixed register? For these notes I don´t want to have the light sound of the head voice but I need the space lateron without having the oportunity the breath another time.

    Hi there,

This is a good question and we actually asked Camille about this. Here's what she had to say about your question:

That's a great observation! Although it may feel different, it's still possible to sing in chest or mix with a lifted palate (which is the most important "space" we're talking about creating to prepare for a high note). Try this: inhale as if you're about to sing a note in high head voice, but then sing a low, rich "woah" or "no" in chest voice. If that lifted palate continues to give you trouble, think more about gently lifting your eyebrows and cheeks, rather than going for a lot of yawn space.

In the end, do what works best for you! The reason we prep for a high note at the beginning of the phrase is so that we sing with a more consistent tone and don't need to make drastic adjustments mid-way through a phrase. See if you can split the difference (ie: not having the palate so high) and find a good balance for your voice!
