    Hello!

My name is Demi and I'm really into rock and metal music! For a while, I have been interested in learning how to scream and add distortion to my voice when I sing a heavy or a rock song, but I am afraid I will damage my vocal chords... Is there any chance where you guys can give a tutorial for vocal distortion and screaming please? :)

    Hi, Demi!

I follow the Naked Vocalist podcast, and they did an episode on learning distortion with Jaime Vendera a few years back - here's the link if you'd like to listen: https://www.thenakedvocalist.com/podcast/34/. Here's a great article on this topic as well to give you some insight before you begin: https://www.thenakedvocalist.com/3-common-mistakes-when-learning-to-sing-rock/

Because learning rock vocals is higher risk, I'd recommend you book a private lesson with Abram to set you up with healthy technique and exercises. He teaches rock vocals and can help get you on the right path! This is a topic Abram can cover in a full-length tutorial for the site in the the future.

The foundation of all types of singing includes good posture, strong breath support, comfort in your different vocal registers, good pitch accuracy, and vocal agility. If you'd still classify yourself as a beginner in these areas, I'd recommend you complete my or Jonathan Estabrooks' 30-day course first. That way, you can start learning rock vocal techniques (which are demanding and can be damaging without someone guiding you) on a solid foundation.
