Now that we have some basic warm ups and exercises under our belt, let’s move forward with applying it all to a song. First, I’ll be introducing an original song, “Shake It Up”, which we made just for this course, followed by a few exercises using the national anthem. We’re using a familiar song to discover any areas of weakness and to monitor posture and breath for correctness.

  • Introduce Shake It Up
  • Sing section of National Anthem
  • Find areas of weakness or tension
  • Remove lyrics and replace with your favorite warm-up syllable
  • Exercise: National Anthem on MUM, YAH, or Lip Trill
  • Return to technique: posture, breath, engaging body
  • Add lyrics back in
  • Don’t: avoid the tricky sections or be too afraid to sing them. You won’t improve if you avoid the challenging stuff!
  • Sing section with lyrics

"Shake It Up" Original Song

There’s a fire deep inside, I can feel it turn the tide

Oh - oh - oh, for the first time

We’re jumpin’ in, waves are strong, but there’s a place where we

belong, oh - oh - oh this is the time

To Shake it up, Tear it down, push against the tide

So Shake it up, all around Gonna be alright

Gonna be alright
